Welcome to Chelsea, Green Hill and Meadowridge Civic League

Prior to the first English landing to Virginia Beach in 1607, the Chesapeake tribe made up the predominant native population in the Lynnhaven territory with the primary village of Chesepioc located at Great Neck Point, a short distance from the Chelsea, Green Hill and Meadowridge neighborhoods.

Upon arrival of British settlers; the first land grant associated with the area was “Green Hill Farm” titled in 1636 to Henry Southell (Southall/Southern) totaling 700 acres. The land was a working plantation well into the nineteenth century and the small brick cottage constructed c.1661 still stands in Green Hill by the Bay.

“Green Hill Farm” passed through several families during the seventeenth century, eventually inherited by John Lovett who built a plantation manor house, “Green Hill”, in 1791 on Lovetts Pond Lane. The Georgian/Federal style home still stands, with two wings added in 1954, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.

In 1971 the 144 acre “Green Hill” estate was parceled out by Virginia Beach based developer Jahn Summs into what eventually became the current Green Hills Farms, Chelsea, and Green Hill By The Bay neighborhoods. Meadowridge was a later development. CGM Civic League encompasses Green Hill, Chelsea and Meadowridge neighborhoods.
